MAKING SENSE OF NONSENSE
Lately, I’ve been finding it challenging navigating my way through the business of health and wellness and I thought maybe others might be feeling the same way, so I decided to start this blog. I passionately believe that we need to look at our health holistically and not just in bits and pieces, as the need arises. I also strongly believe in balance and my friends and family will tell you that I never shut up about finding balance.
I started on this journey almost 26 years ago when my eldest son was four months old. He was plagued with ear infections and nothing seemed to help him. The doctor prescribed antibiotics each time and he suffered more and more. In actuality, the issue was the dairy I was consuming while breastfeeding. His immune system was compromised and Corey ended up being lactose intolerant. This started a lifetime fascination for me on nutrition and health. No one believed me when I said the drugs were making him sicker. My doctor thought I was crazy when I cut dairy out of my diet and started giving him homeopathic remedies to boost his immune system. It was hard to convince my family of my alternative views. I would take the drugs with me on our cottage weekends to make everyone feel better but once I started him on a different regime we never needed the drugs again.
Years later the medical community realized that antibiotics did not cure ear infections and that over prescription of antibiotics was creating a health epidemic. I must admit I did feel somewhat justified when this happened. Unfortunately, antibiotic resistance is a huge, scary problem. There is also the issue of what continuous antibiotics do to the growing body and developing immune system; which is definitely a subject for another time.
Strong, abundant bacterial flora is one of the cornerstones of good health and it is destroyed by drugs as well as processed, pesticide filled, hormone ridden foods. Foods that are dead and do not have live enzymes due to over processing.
After years of studying nutrition and being fascinated by its effects on the human body I am amazed at all the different theories out there. The number of crazy ideas about the right way to nourish ourselves. Many of these ideas are fueled by money and much of it is all marketing and the need for a quick fix. This is what motivates me to write this blog and to try and make some sense of nonsense.
